What is FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon)?
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is a service offered by Amazon where sellers send their inventory to Amazon’s fulfillment centers, and Amazon handles all storage, picking, packing, shipping, and customer service (including returns) for those products. FBA products automatically qualify for Amazon Prime’s free two-day shipping.
Why It Matters
FBA is one of the most powerful advantages available to Amazon sellers. Prime badge eligibility dramatically increases conversion rates — the majority of Amazon’s most active shoppers filter for Prime products exclusively. FBA also frees sellers from logistics operations, allowing them to focus on product development, marketing, and scaling.
How It Works
Sellers create FBA shipment plans in Seller Central, label their products with Amazon-standard FNSKU barcodes, ship inventory to Amazon’s designated fulfillment centers, and Amazon takes over from there. FBA fees include a per-unit fulfillment fee (based on product size and weight) and monthly storage fees (based on average cubic feet of space used). Amazon’s FBA calculator helps sellers determine whether the fee structure is profitable for their specific product.
Real-World Example
A seller of handcrafted wood phone stands transitions from self-fulfillment (FBM) to FBA. Their conversion rate increases from 4.2% to 9.8% after gaining the Prime badge. Shipping time for customers drops from 3–7 days to 1–2 days. Despite FBA fees reducing margin by 12%, the doubling of conversion rate more than compensates.
