What is TACOS (Total Advertising Cost of Sale)?
Total Advertising Cost of Sale (TACOS) is an Amazon advertising metric that measures total ad spend as a percentage of total sales (both organic and ad-attributed combined). TACOS = (Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Sales) × 100. Unlike ACOS, which only measures performance within paid advertising, TACOS reveals advertising’s impact on overall business health.
Why It Matters
TACOS is a more complete and strategic metric than ACOS because it captures the relationship between paid advertising and organic sales. Effective Amazon PPC doesn’t just generate direct ad sales — it improves organic rankings, which generates additional organic sales that ACOS never captures. TACOS declining over time indicates that organic sales are growing as a result of advertising investment.
How It Works
A product generating $10,000 in monthly sales total ($4,000 ad-attributed + $6,000 organic) with $800 in total ad spend has an ACOS of 20% ($800 ÷ $4,000) and a TACOS of 8% ($800 ÷ $10,000). The low TACOS indicates advertising is efficiently boosting organic performance. If TACOS increases over time without proportional sales growth, it suggests advertising dependency without organic improvement — a warning signal.
Real-World Example
A new Amazon product launches with an ACOS of 45% and TACOS of 40% in month 1 (most sales are ad-driven). By month 4, as organic rankings improve, ACOS stays at 40% but TACOS drops to 22% because organic sales now represent a much larger share of total revenue. The downward TACOS trend confirms the advertising investment is building organic momentum.
