What is ROI (Return on Investment)?
Return on Investment (ROI) is a financial metric used to evaluate the profitability of an investment relative to its cost. In marketing, ROI measures how much profit a marketing activity generates compared to how much it costs to execute. ROI = (Net Profit ÷ Total Investment) × 100.
Why It Matters
ROI is the universal language of business decision-making. Every marketing channel — SEO, paid ads, social media, email — ultimately needs to be justified by its return. Tracking ROI allows businesses to allocate budgets to the highest-performing activities and discontinue those that drain resources without returns.
How It Works
Unlike ROAS (which tracks revenue against ad spend), ROI measures net profit against total cost. A campaign with $2,000 in revenue and $500 in ad spend but $800 in additional production costs has a net profit of $700 and ROI of ($700 ÷ $1,300) × 100 = 53.8%. ROI is most meaningful for long-term initiatives like SEO and content marketing, where the payoff compounds over months or years.
Real-World Example
Digital Media Run invests $3,000 in an SEO content strategy over 6 months. The content generates 1,200 organic visits per month that result in 15 client inquiries and 4 new clients at an average contract value of $2,500 each. Total revenue attributed: $10,000. ROI = ($10,000 – $3,000) ÷ $3,000 × 100 = 233%.
