What is Sales Funnel?
A sales funnel (also called a marketing funnel) is a model that describes the stages a potential customer goes through from first awareness of your brand to making a purchase decision. It is called a ‘funnel’ because a large number of potential customers enter at the top, but the number narrows at each stage as people drop off before converting.
Why It Matters
Understanding your sales funnel allows you to identify where prospects are being lost and optimize each stage to improve conversion rates. Without a funnel framework, marketing activities are disconnected and lack strategic alignment.
How It Works
Classic funnel stages are Awareness (prospect discovers you exist — via SEO, social media, paid ads), Interest (prospect engages with your content and learns more), Consideration (prospect compares you to alternatives, reads reviews, consumes case studies), Intent (prospect shows clear buying signals — requests a quote, books a demo), and Conversion (prospect becomes a customer). Modern funnels also include Retention and Advocacy stages after the sale.
Real-World Example
A prospective client finds Digital Media Run’s blog post about Amazon listing optimization through Google. They read several blog posts (Interest), download a free Amazon SEO checklist (Consideration), receive a nurture email sequence, book a free consultation (Intent), and sign a 3-month contract (Conversion). Each stage was intentionally designed to move the prospect forward.
