What is Meta Description?
A meta description is an HTML attribute that provides a brief summary of a webpage’s content. It appears as the snippet of text displayed beneath the page title and URL in Google’s search results. While meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, they significantly impact click-through rate (CTR).
Why It Matters
Your meta description is essentially your ad copy in organic search. A compelling, relevant description convinces searchers to click your result over competitors’. Higher CTR signals to Google that your page is relevant, which can indirectly improve rankings over time.
How It Works
A meta description should be between 150–160 characters. It should naturally include your target keyword (Google bolds it in the results), clearly communicate the page’s value, and include a subtle call to action. If you don’t write one, Google will auto-generate one — and it’s usually generic. Google may also rewrite your description if it decides another part of your page better matches the query.
Real-World Example
For a page about ‘Amazon A+ Content,’ a weak meta description reads: ‘This page is about A+ Content on Amazon.’ A strong one reads: ‘Learn how Amazon A+ Content boosts conversions by up to 10%. See examples, best practices, and how to create yours step by step.
