What Are SERP Features?
SERP features are special result formats that appear on Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs) beyond the standard blue-link organic listings. They are designed to provide faster, richer answers directly on the results page.
Why It Matters
SERP features give you additional chances to appear prominently in search results — sometimes above the #1 organic result. Featured snippets (‘position zero’) and People Also Ask boxes can dramatically increase visibility and click-through rates even if you’re not ranking #1.
How It Works
Common SERP features include Featured Snippets (a highlighted answer box at the top), People Also Ask (expandable Q&A sections), Image Packs, Video Carousels, Knowledge Panels, Local Packs (map results with business listings), Shopping Ads, and Site Links. Each SERP feature has specific triggers — for example, how-to schema markup helps trigger HowTo rich results, while having a Google Business Profile is required for Local Pack appearances.
Real-World Example
A photography blog writes a concise, well-structured article answering ‘What is aperture in photography?’ with a clear definition in the first 100 words. Google selects that answer for a Featured Snippet, putting the blog’s content at the very top of the results — above sites ranking #1, #2, and #3 organically.
